Transport Authority has banned land transport vehicles all over Maldives for three hours tomorrow night to mark Earth Hour and to increase awareness regarding global warming and climate change.
The authority has banned vehicles from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm tomorrow.
Transport Authority has said that the only vehicles that would be allowed during these hours are vehicles used by security forces, ambulances, and vehicles used by people with special needs; and that all vehicles that do not fall into these categories would be banned in accordance with article 5 (d) of the Land Transport Act 2009/5.
Transport Authority said that a special permit must be obtained from the authority for vehicles that are allowed during the three hours, and that vehicle owners in the atolls must obtain this permit in writing from Atoll Council Offices and Island Council Offices.
Transport Authority further said that any violation of this decision would carry a fine of MVR 750 as per article 65 of the Land Transport Act 2009/5.
Meanwhile, Environment Ministry has urged people to avoid using electricity unless absolutely necessary between 8:30 pm and 9.30 pm tomorrow.
