Foreign Ministry confirms no Maldivians affected by Nepal flash floods, urges citizens to reach out

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged any Maldivians in Nepal who may need assistance following the recent flash floods near the Nepal-China border to contact the Ministry.

In a statement, the Ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation. The Maldivian High Commission in India and the Maldivian Honorary Consul in Kathmandu have confirmed that no Maldivian has been affected by the incident.

The Ministry also noted that no Maldivian citizens were in the area where the disaster occurred.

However, the Foreign Ministry has asked any Maldivians currently in Nepal who require assistance or further information to contact the Ministry’s hotline at +960 7983400 or email [email protected].

The dangerous floods were triggered by the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas. When part of the massive glacier broke off near the Nepal-Tibet border, the force of the slide was so intense that geological surveys initially estimated the event to be equivalent to a 4.4 to 5.2 magnitude impact.

Millions of tons of sediment, debris and rock surged into the valleys and rivers below. Monsoon rains accelerated the flow, sending water downstream at unusually high speed and burying roadside buildings under mud and debris.

More than 270 people have been killed, and over 1,300 remain missing.
