The parliament has sent a notice to Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim regarding the case submitted by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to remove him from the post of Member appointed to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) by the parliament.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim told Sun Online today that the notice was sent to Gasim today as per parliament procedures.
He said that it is not yet known when the issue would be put on the agenda, and that it would be put on the agenda after discussion with the leaders of political parties.
MDP Parliamentary Group Member Ibrahim Rasheed (Bondey) said that Gasim is the presidential candidate of Jumhooree Party (JP), and that he thus cannot also act as a member of JSC. He accused Gasim of influencing the efforts by the commission to hold judges accountable.
JP Spokesperson Moosa Rameez said that MDP’s purpose, through making allegations against Gasim and removing him from JSC member, is to defame him. He said that MDP acts in this manner because they are intimidated by Gasim, as he is the presidential candidate with the most public support.
