Parliament Committee proposes 8 names to the floor to be appointed to CIC

The Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affair has proposed 8 names to the Parliament floor seeking approval to be appointed to the Customs Integrity Commission (CIC). The 8 names were filtered from a pool of 12 candidates who applied for the post.

Customs Act, ratified on the 11th of May 2011 stipulates that a five-member Customs Integrity Commission is to be established. The names of the 12 candidates who initially applied were forwarded to the Parliament by the President in June 2012.

The report submitted to the Parliament floor by the Economic Affairs Committee following their review of the candidates states that two of the candidates who stood for the post had withdrawn their nominations, and that some candidates were disqualified as they scored less than the minimum 75 standard of percentage points.

With a total of 96.75 percentage points, candidate Vizad Ali of H. Aazadevaadhee sits on top of the list. Second highest number of points were scored by Yousuf Maaniu Mohamed of G. Atha with a total of 93.6 percentage points. While Jihad Anees of Gaafu Alif Kanduhulhudhoo Bluerose stood in third place with a 89.89 percentage points, Fareesha Adam of Male’ Dhaftharu was listed at fourth place with 89.88 percentage points. Fathimath Shamveela of G. Ali Aabaadh had scored 89 percentage points, Abdulla Shinah of G. Bilalge scored 87 percentage points, Abdulla Nisam scored 86.11 percentage points, and Aishath Shiuna of H. Baraboamaage scored a total of 83.44 percentage points.

The committee reviewed the candidates based on their academic qualifications, capability, experience and integrity.

The names of the candidates were then presented to the Parliament floor, in descending order of how they had scored points. A candidate needs receive a majority vote from the total number of MPs present at the session to be appointed to the Commission.

The monthly salary of a CIC member is MVR 32,500. They will also be allowed MVR 1000 as a monthly phone allowance, and MVR 10,000 as annual premium. The monthly salaries of the President and Vice President of the Commission are higher, totaling MVR 37,500 and MVR35,500 respectively. The total annual pay for each member calculates to MVR 412,000 excluding the President and Vice President, who will receive an MVR 472,000 and MVR 448,000 respectively.
