StatePharma holds discussions with India’s Serum Institute for vaccine, medicine procurement

State Pharma, the Maldives’ state-owned pharmaceutical corporation, held discussions with the Serum Institute of India on the procurement of essential vaccines and basic medicines required in the Maldives on Sunday.

The Serum Institute of India is one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers and a major supplier to global vaccination programs supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations.

According to State Pharma, the meeting was held during an official visit to the Maldives by Sandeep Muley, Director of International Business at the Serum Institute. The corporation said the discussions focused primarily on identifying and exploring ways to strengthen the reliable and efficient supply of vaccines and other essential pharmaceutical products to the Maldives.

The discussions also covered a wide range of areas, including strengthening medical procurement systems and identifying potential opportunities for collaboration on future public health initiatives.

State Pharma said the meeting marks an important step in its ongoing efforts to expand its international supplier network and establish strategic partnerships with leading pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The initiative ultimately aims to ensure the uninterrupted, sustainable, and convenient availability of safe and high-quality medicines and vaccines for the Maldivian public.

The shortage of adequate medical supplies has long remained a concern in the Maldives. In an effort to address these challenges, the government established State Pharma in September last year to expand the bulk procurement, importation, and nationwide distribution of healthcare products.

Despite the commencement of State Pharma’s operations, however, members of the public continue to report difficulties in accessing basic medicines.

In addition to its discussions with the Serum Institute, State Pharma held talks with AstraZeneca, one of Europe’s leading pharmaceutical companies, on the 5th of this month to explore further opportunities for cooperation.
