FDC installing CCTV cameras near Amaan Towers to identify waste dumpers

Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), on Thursday, said that surveillance cameras are being installed around Aman Towers in Hulhumalé Phase II to identify individuals illegally dumping waste in the area, warning that offenders will face legal action.

The move follows a significant increase in illegal dumping at the site, where FDC recently removed approximately 670 tonnes of accumulated waste.

In a post on X on Thursday, the corporation said it had decided to monitor the area surrounding Aman Towers through CCTV cameras as part of efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment for residents. FDC stated that the surveillance system would allow individuals disposing of waste illegally to be identified in real time and warned that violators would be subject to legal action.

FDC also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing all necessary measures to curb unauthorized waste disposal in the area.

According to data previously released by the corporation, FDC has spent MVR 13.5 million over the past nine months on waste management and removal in the area. The corporation said the considerable expenditure was driven by the continued dumping of various types of waste in public spaces in violation of regulations.

With Hulhumalé experiencing rapid population growth, waste management has become an increasingly significant challenge. Illegal dumping in public spaces and along roads has intensified, with the issue particularly pronounced in Phase II. Common violations include leaving bulky waste, such as discarded furniture and construction materials, on streets, as well as disposing of unsorted waste.

To address these ongoing challenges, calls have grown for greater public awareness initiatives and further improvements to WAMCO’s waste management services, including more efficient and consistent waste collection.
