Two New Zealand hikers rescued after days stranded on Solomon Islands' highest peak

Two New Zealand hikers stranded for days on a remote mountain in the Solomon Islands have been rescued after becoming trapped in a ravine following torrential rain, according to Radio New Zealand.

Solomon Islands Police confirmed that 25-year-old Keanu Isaksson and 19-year-old Luca Zylstra-Law were found together on Tuesday morning on Mount Popomanaseu, the country's highest peak at 2,335 metres.

In a Facebook post, Isaksson's mother, Denise Holl, said the rescue was successful after the pair felled a tree from a previous gear drop, allowing a helicopter to lift them to safety using a rescue net.

"My son and Luca have done lots of adventures together and are very close, and they would have taken very good care of each other," Holl was reported as saying by ABC News.

Earlier, the Solomon Islands government said local authorities were coordinating efforts to reach the stranded hikers.
