Deputy Speaker: People already call this a zoo, let’s not stoop to that level

Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem said on Wednesday that people already call the Parliament a zoo, as he advised lawmakers against “stooping to that level.”

 The remark came after he ejected Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad (Fitte) from the chambers for protesting the decision to transfer the waste that burned in a large fire at the waste disposal site in K. Thilafushi to HDh. Kunburudhoo.

Addressing the Parliament afterwards, Saleem said that the legislative assembly is a place where lawmakers must work with sincerity and patience.

He said that the actions of lawmakers have constantly drawn public criticism, with many referring to the Parliament as a sheep pen or zoo.

“People are already calling this place a sheep pen or even a zoo. So, let’s not stoop to that level. Let’s be more civilized,” he said.

Saleem added that we would not allow the Parliament to turn into a zoo on his watch.
