‘Threats exist, but we will never hesitate to defend Maldives’

Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy says Maldives’ independence will be protected without fear or hesitation, despite emerging threats in the region.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the Australia-donated Coast Guard vessel Imaduddin on Monday evening, Hilmy said the regional security environment has changed significantly.

“Many things that threaten the independence and security of Maldives are happening near our boundary line at all times, and those threats have now spread inside Maldives’ territory,” Hilmy said.

He did not specify the exact nature of the threats.

Hilmy said defending Maldives requires vigilance against both external and internal threats. He noted that the situation underscores the importance of having a capable military force that can respond to dangers, intercept vessels and individuals who threaten national security, and protect Maldives’ interests in foreign waters.

Hilmy announced that 20 interceptors will be procured before November 3.

He assured that the MNDF Coast Guard will guard Maldivian waters without fear or hesitation.

Speaking about Imaduddin, Hilmy said the vessel was acquired through President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s collaboration with the Australian Government as part of the President’s policy to strengthen defence resources and safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The vessel is brand new and built by Austal Ltd. at the Henderson shipyard in Perth, Australia. It is named after Sultan Muhammad Imaduddin I, in honour of his efforts to strengthen Maldives’ defence.

The vessel is equipped with the latest systems and technology for extensive maritime operations.
