The Faisal Foundation was forced to change the venue for its FIFA World Cup final screening after the government informed the organisation that the match could not be shown at the Gn. Atoll Education Centre in Fuvahmulah.
It has long been a tradition of the foundation, led by former Vice President Faisal Naseem, to host public viewings of FIFA finals at the school hall. This year’s final was scheduled for 12 midnight on Monday at the Atoll Education Centre.
However, an official from the foundation told Sun that the government notified them that the screening could not be held at the school, that too after the hall had been fully prepared.
The foundation said the 20-foot screen installed for the event had to be removed, and it was damaged while being taken down, the official reported.
“The World Cup finals have been shown every year since 1998 by the Faisal Foundation in the school hall,” the association said, adding that no president has ever interfered with the event before.
Despite the setback, the foundation said the World Cup final will still be screened at an alternative location.
The Gn. Atoll Education Centre could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, Faisal posted on social media on Friday announcing that, as in previous years, special arrangements had been made for the people of Fuvahmulah to watch the World Cup final. He also said a draw would be held, with the winner receiving an Umrah trip and other valuable prizes.
Argentina, the defending champions, will face Spain at 12 am on Monday night.
