The Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have launched what state-affiliated media described as a large-scale missile and drone operation targeting "enemy bases" across the region, setting fuel tanks and ammunition depots on fire at Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan.

The IRGC stated the strike on the Jordanian installation was the first phase of its response to US attacks on Iranian coastal bases, warning that the retaliatory operation is continuing.

The force said its aerospace forces also struck Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, claiming hits on helicopter maintenance facilities, a hangar housing a P-8 aircraft and a US drone command-and-control centre.

Iranian state media reported that the IRGC targeted two airbases in Kuwait. The claims come amid a widening cycle of retaliatory strikes between Iran and the US across the region.

It added that the operation targeted locations identified after monitoring "enemy movements" over the past 48 hours.

In a statement, IRGC said its Navy operation in the Strait of Hormuz targeted two ships it accused of disabling tracking systems, violating navigation rules and posing a threat to maritime security.

"Legitimate target"

It also comes soon after Iran warned on Monday that any location used to launch attacks against the country would be considered a "legitimate target" for retaliatory strikes.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry warned neighbouring countries against allowing their territory or facilities to be used by the US or other parties to carry out attacks on Iran.

It said neighbouring states were obligated under international law to prevent their territory from being used for military action against Iran, warning that the "origin and launch point" of any attack would be targeted by the Iranian armed forces.

The developments come hours after the US military announced a fresh wave of strikes on Iran, saying the operation was aimed at degrading Tehran's ability to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The ministry strongly condemned US strikes carried out over the past 22 hours, describing them as a serious violation of the UN Charter.

It accused Washington of violating nearly every provision of the Memorandum of Understanding signed 25 days ago and of committing "war crimes" by targeting transport infrastructure, fishing boats, cargo vessels and meteorological facilities.

The ministry also accused the US of interfering in arrangements governing the Strait of Hormuz, saying the move had restored insecurity to the strategic waterway and disrupted international commercial shipping.
