The number of people injured at construction sites in the Male' City area has risen by 65 percent over the past four years, according to statistics shared by two government hospitals.

The information was revealed in responses sent to North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), who had inquired about construction‑related injuries. A letter from Male' City Group of Hospitals CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem stated that injuries have steadily increased year on year.

From 2022 to last year, a total of 458 people were treated for construction‑related injuries at Hulhumale' Hospital and IGMH. The figures show a consistent upward trend.

According to the statistics, IGMH treated the highest number of cases in 2024, while Hulhumale' Hospital recorded its highest number in 2025.

Breakdown of cases treated over the past four years:

  • 2022: 90 people

  • 2023: 87 people

  • 2024: 132 people

  • 2025: 149 people

Despite the rising numbers, unsafe construction practices remain a serious concern.

Just last Saturday, two workers were injured after falling from a building under construction on Majeedhee Magu. One has since been discharged, while the other remains hospitalised.

The Male' City Council identified negligence in the case and fined the responsible parties MVR 5,000.
