India presents Security System to Immigration Department

The Indian government has donated a Security System to the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Maldives.

The Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) was presented to Controller of Immigration Dr Mohamed Ali by Indian High Commissioner D. M. Mulay at a ceremony held at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport today.

The Immigration Department said that APIS is a system used by several countries in the world, and that it would facilitate the collection of biometric data of passengers before they travel, and allow this information to be relayed to the Maldives while passengers are en route to Maldives.

The department said that the system will be established and implemented in about two months.

“Presently, we have to screen almost all passengers. We are not able to identify suspects or people who are on the black list. This system would be able to identify them, and we would have prior information on them. We would know which action to take before they arrive,” said Senior Immigration Officer Ali Saeed.

Controller of Immigration Dr Mohamed Ali said while speaking at the ceremony that the Maldives has been in need of such a system for a long time, and that it would assist in simplifying the processes.
