The Guardian-class patrol vessel gifted to the Maldives by Australia is expected to arrive in the country later this month, manned by a crew from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
Named "Imaaduddin," the vessel was officially handed over to the Maldives on April 19. The patrol boat was newly built in Australia specifically for transfer to the Maldives.
According to the Australian Department of Defense, the handover reflects the enduring relationship between the two countries, founded on mutual trust and respect, and is expected to further strengthen and elevate bilateral defense cooperation between Australia and the Maldives.
Sun has learned that vessel is currently sailing to the Maldives, manned by an MNDF Coast Guard crew. The patrol boat is expected to arrive in Maldivian waters between June 15 and June 17.
Following the handover, MNDF described the vessel as a significant addition to its operational capabilities, noting that it will enhance the military’s capacity to monitor and safeguard the Maldives’ maritime territory while improving its ability to respond to maritime threats and challenges.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem, Commandant, MNDF Coast Guard, thanked Australia for the invaluable contribution towards enhancing Maldives’ maritime defense capability.
Commander of Maritime Border Command, Rear Admiral Brett Sonter stated that Australia is proud to support the capacity enhancement as it remains committed to working alongside the Maldives to uphold a peaceful, secure, and resilient Indian Ocean region.
Australia had pledged to donate one to the Maldives in June 2025, during a visit to Male’ by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles.
It marks the 24th and final Austal Ships Pty Ltd-built Guardian-class patrol boat delivered by Australia to a partner nation.
Alongside Australia’s contribution, Türkiye also gifted a naval vessel to the Maldives last year. Following the transfer, Maldivian military personnel received training in Türkiye to support the operation and maintenance of the vessel.
The vessel was originally commissioned into the Turkish Navy in May 1981. After 43 years of service, it was later reassigned for testing and training purposes before being transferred to the Maldives.
