Dr. Mohamed Mahid Shareef has been appointed to a minister-level position to lead the Citizens' Complaints Bureau.

In a statement on Thursday, the President’s Office said that Mahid was appointed as the President’s Office Principal Secretary to the President on the Citizens' Complaints Bureau.

He was appointed to the ministerial-level position by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday, said the President’s Office.

Mahid previously served in various government roles, including as permanent secretary at several ministries and deputy vice-chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).

At the time of his appointment, he was serving as CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives.

Mahid holds a Doctor of Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Public Sector Management.

President Muizzu announced the decision to establish the bureau during his annual address to the Parliament on February 5.

According to the President’s Office, the bureau was established to ensure the government remains aware of public concerns and responds accordingly.

It will operate round the clock under the President’s Office.

A key function of the bureau is the systematic handling of public complaints through a digital framework, ensuring grievances submitted through various channels are efficiently tracked and addressed.

This includes coordinating with relevant government agencies to obtain necessary information and respond to complaints.

As part of its services, the bureau will also establish a 24-hour call center.
