Transparency Maldives has condemned the imprisonment of two journalists, Leevan Ali Naseer and Mohamed Shahzan, as an attack on the foundations of democratic governance.

In a post on X, Transparency Maldives strongly condemned the jail sentences handed down to Adhadhu journalists Leevan and Shahzan, and called for their immediate release.

Transparency Maldives noted that the two journalists were not given adequate opportunity to seek legal assistance. Therefore, there are concerns about fair trial standards and the constitutional protections guaranteed to them, the organisation said.

At the same time, such actions restrict press freedom and weaken democratic accountability in the Maldives, which Transparency Maldives described as an attack on the foundations of democratic governance.

Both journalists were jailed for allegedly violating a Criminal Court order in connection with the charges against the heads of the newspaper.

The two journalists were produced before the Criminal Court on Tuesday. The hearings were kept secret.

The journalists have now been jailed, Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa told Sun. He said the two were arrested without any opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.

The court sentenced Shahzan to 15 days in jail and Leevan to 10 days.

Journalist Leevan was produced before the court for writing a report about the court order. Shahzan was arrested for allegedly questioning President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in violation of a court order at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Monday.
