Dr. Althaf Adnan Ismail has become the first Maldivian doctor to specialize in breast cancer surgery.
In a Facebook post, Hulhumale' Hospital congratulated Dr. Althaf on completing her breast cancer surgery fellowship. The hospital said her expertise will help strengthen and expand its services.
After completing medical school, Dr. Althaf began her career at IGMH in 2015. She later worked at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital in 2020 and joined Tree Top Hospital in 2022.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the Maldives.
According to the Health Protection Agency, more than 1,900 people have been registered with cancer since 2017, with women accounting for 57 percent of cases and men 43 percent.
The registry shows that lung, prostate, colon, stomach and liver cancers are the most common among men, while breast, colon, lung, cervical and thyroid cancers are the most common among women.
