Progressive Party of Maldives presidential primary candidate and Mulaku MP Abdulla Yameen has pledged that he will attain peace and stability in the country, and that he will govern through the implementation of the rule of law.
Speaking in Artificial Beach last night, Yameen said that he will attain peace in the country during his presidency, and that he will empower the police and military to the fullest extent that is allowed through the laws that govern them, but cautioned that those powers must be used righteously and within the boundaries of the law. He also said that he will facilitate the latest resources for the police and military to utilize.
“What Yameen is trying to achieve is to implement the rule of law in Maldives. I will not hesitate to do that. I will bring peace to the Maldives. For the Maldives police and military, I am telling you that you will be empowered to the fullest, within the boundaries of the law. However, I also want to tell you, that those powers must be used within the boundaries of the law. You will get all the modern resources during my government. I am telling you to be brave enough to implement the law along with it,” said Yameen.
Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed also participated in last night’s rally. Referring to him, Yameen said that the Maldives security system has been evolving to a democratic policing system starting from February 08th last year, and that the model that existed earlier had allowed for the people in power to issue illegal orders and hide behind the security forces. He said that the police leadership that existed then had proven their dedication.
Yameen noted that the police are moving away from a security policing service towards the direction of becoming a democratic and accountable policing system under Jameel’s leadership.
“Starting from February 08th, the previous security system is evolving towards a democratic policing system. Under Dr. Jameel’s supervision, the police are now working, like in other countries around the world, to move away from a security policing service and towards a democratic, accountable policing system,” said Yameen.
Regarding the case where the Prosecutor General (PG) had allowed postponing of former President Nasheed’s hearing by four weeks on the case regarding the enforced disappearance of the Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed, Yameen said that it was not possible for the PG to consent to postponing the trial.
“What I have to tell the PG is to take a look at the Constitution. All policies regarding the criminal matters, according the Constitution, shall be decided by the State Attorney General. PG is not a completely independent self-governing body. PG is independent to the extent to carry out the necessary work within the principles that are set up for him,” Yameen said.
Yameen pledged to the people that he will hold no grudges with any politicians if he wins this year’s presidency. He said that he will refrain from a spirit of vengeance and that he will also not constitute a presidential commission within 30 days of attaining power.
