Not true that 3,000 forms of Gaumee Ittihad went missing: Elections Commission

Elections Commissions has refuted Gaumee Ittihad Party’s (GIP) claim that 3,000 membership forms submitted to the commission had gone missing.

Vice President of EC Mohamed Fayaz told Sun Online today that there was some confusion when sorting out the forms of GIP and Gaumee Party, but that did not involve 3,000 forms. He said that the mistake was corrected and the parties were duly informed.

GIP Council Member Aminath Ali said at a press conference today that 3,000 membership forms submitted to EC had gone missing and that EC had failed to explain why this happened.

“Three thousand forms submitted to EC have gone missing. Letters were sent to clarify what happened, but there has been no explanation about the 3,000 forms. We even met with EC officials, but they could not provide an acceptable answer,” she said.

Aminath Ali said that the party will not be dissolved, and that plans are being made to increase membership.

GIP currently has 4,012 members registered with EC, and 787 pending membership forms.

The bill on political parties passed by the parliament yesterday states that parties with less than 10,000 members will be dissolved.
