Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has established a dedicated sheltered area at the Male' Commercial Harbour to speed up the clearance of perishable food items imported ahead of Ramadan.
The 3,000‑square‑foot shed was built by MPL at a time when the number of vessels arriving at the harbour has increased, causing delays in unloading and processing cargo. MPL said the new space is intended to help traders clear perishable goods as quickly as possible during the busy Ramadan period.
According to MPL, the sheltered area will provide additional room for rapid unloading and temporary storage, enabling faster clearance of temperature‑sensitive food items.

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed previously noted concerns from traders that food shipments were facing delays due to space constraints at the commercial port.
The Male' Commercial Harbour is decades old, and MPL has been working to modernise and reorganise operations. Some activities have already been relocated to ease congestion and improve efficiency.
