A special health insurance scheme for Maldivian national athletes and officials was launched on Thursday, fulfilling a long‑standing request of the country’s sports community.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the initiative in a post on X, stating that 385 athletes and officials from 18 national sports associations have already been enrolled under the new coverage.

He described the scheme as something the Maldivian sports family has been waiting for “for many years.”

According to the President, the insurance will provide major relief for athletes who suffer injuries during domestic competitions, international tournaments, and overseas training programs. He said the arrangement ensures the health and safety of athletes and offers additional encouragement for them to continue pursuing sports at a competitive level.

The President noted that the scheme will support athletes in accessing timely treatment and rehabilitation, strengthening the overall well‑being of the country’s elite sports community.
