The People’s Majlis and India’s Lok Sabha have discussed further strengthening inter‑parliamentary relations.
Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who is in New Delhi to attend the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), paid a courtesy call on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
During the meeting, Abdul Raheem said the Lok Sabha’s planning and organisation of the Commonwealth Speakers’ conference demonstrated India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation among legislatures. He also highlighted the ongoing training programmes provided by the Lok Sabha Secretariat to Majlis staff under a cooperation agreement signed six years ago.

The two Speakers discussed additional areas where Maldives–India parliamentary relations could be strengthened. Om Birla said India remains ready to share its experience in technology and other key fields with the Maldives.
Abdul Raheem’s visit comes at a time when the Majlis is working outside its formal session, including on constitutional amendments to combine the presidential and parliamentary elections and shorten the term of the current 20th Parliament.
The Speaker also made an official visit to India last February at the invitation of Om Birla and Deputy Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. During that visit, he met both leaders as well as several senior officials of the Indian government.
