Will push for review of flogging sentence given to minor: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he will push for review of the flogging sentence given to a minor by Juvenile Court.

The president, in a tweet tonight, also expressed sadness over this sentence.

“I am saddened by the sentence of flogging handed to a minor Govt will push for review of this position,” President Waheed said on Twitter.

A 15-year-old girl from Shaviyani Feydhoo has been convicted of fornication and sentenced to 100 lashes and eight months’ house arrest by Juvenile Court.

Several groups, including the UN which issued a statement tonight, have expressed concern over this sentence.
