Former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has visited his son, Dhigggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon at Maafushi Prison.
The court has ordered Faris – charged with bribery – to detention pending the outcome of his trial.
Maumoon arrived in K. Maafushi to visit his son at noon this Thursday.
He was joined by his daughter, State Minister at Ministry of Health Dhunya Maumoon and her husband, husband of daughter Yumna Maumoon, and Faris’ wife and son.
This is the first time for Maumoon to visit his son since his detention at Maafushi Prison.
Faris’ mother, the former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim and sister Yuma Maumoon have also visited Faris at the prison on a previous occasion.
Faris was arrested by authorities on July 17 from his residence. He is accused of bribing fellow parliamentarians to turn the no-confidence vote against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.
Maumoon has been vocal in his protest against the current administration, headed by his half-brother President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He alleged the authorities have no evidence against Faris.
