April 26: Largest quantity of fish caught in Maldivian history

April 26 saw the largest quantity of fish caught in recorded Maldivian history, reports Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture.

Fishermen of Maldives have broken the record previously made in April, 2016 when they caught 454 tons of fish.

Director at Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, Hussain Shinan reported this Sunday that Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) alone weighed 420 tons of fish on April 26.

Shinan said that that – along with the quantity of fish weighed by other companies that day made it the day the largest quantity of fish was recorded to be caught in Maldivian history.

“We have only received statistics from MIFCO so far. That, along with the fish weighed by other companies will make it the day the largest quantity of fish was caught in Maldivian history. I don’t know how many tons it is, exactly, at the moment” said Shinan.

Maldivian fishermen catch an average of 70 tons of fish per day. The months from November to April are always the best.

The south of Maldives has seen a peak in fishing, and the decision by MIFCO to limit the quantity of fish it weighs has resulted in huge wastage with fishermen having to through away their catch.
