Ex-President Waheed completes challenge, swims with Sajan

Former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has completed the challenge set by General-Secretary of Maldives Olympic Committee Ahmed Marzooq (Marey) by participating in a training session with top Maldivian female swimmer Aminath Sajan.

Waheed completed the challenge on Thursday morning, joining a two-hour training session with Sajan at Male’ Swimming Track.

“This is a great challenge. I’m very happy with this initiative. I didn’t come here because I was confident about my swimming skills. I came here to encourage and support this,” said Waheed.

He said that he too, had learned a lot by joining the training session with Sajan.

After swimming with the former Maldivian President, Sajan said that it wasn’t something she had ever even dreamed possible, and said that it was a completely new experience.

Marey had also challenged current Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and former Maldivian Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed to train with a top Maldivian athlete.

All three political leaders have accepted the challenge.

It is President Yameen who faces the biggest challenge, having to complete a training session with the fastest runner in Maldives – Hassan Saaid.

Saaid had won the gold medal in the 100-meter race and silver medal in the 200-meter race during the Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion Islands in 2015.

Meanwhile, Nasheed needs to complete a training session with athlete Samha Ahmed, who won a bronze medal for Maldives during the Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion Islands in 2015.

Maumoon needs to complete a training session with the singles, doubles and team-event badminton bronze medalist during the Indian Ocean Island Games in 2011 and 2015.

They all need to complete the challenge before the Paralympics with will start on September 7.
