Chemotherapy suite opened at IGMH

A chemotherapy suite for cancer patients have been opened at India Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

The suite was opened by the Health Minister Iruthisham Adam at a special ceremony held at the hospital today.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Iruthisham said that the number of cancer patients in the country is increasing day by day and establishing a chemotherapy suite in an important service to the country.

“…for families going abroad for this treatment are facing spending, time and more trouble from the government as well…” The Health Minister said.

Minister Iruthisham said that 3420 people have been sent abroad under Aasandha seeking treatment for cancer and one the highest priorities of this government now is conducting cancer awareness programs.

The minister said that under the bilateral agreement between the Maldives and India, discussions are underway to train doctors and nurses of IGMH to treat cancer. And she said that doctors from India’s Regional Cancer Center would be arriving at IGMH soon to start working at the hospital’s chemo suite.

The CEO of IGMH, Brigadier General-retired Farhath Shaheer also spoke at the ceremony saying that the chemotherapy suite established today was a link in the chain to improve the hospital’s services.

He said that a number of cancer patients are being treated at IGMH already and said that 250 patients are being screened every year at the hospitals Reproductive Health Center.

The chemotherapy suite opened today at IGMH has the capacity for two patients.
